What is a Practicum? And how is this different than an internship? What are the expectations for me as a counseling student at ECU?
Do these questions sound familiar? On this page, I will give you all the information you should need to understand the clinical experiences you will have while you are in the Counselor Education Program at ECU. A lot of this information can be found on our Program Website, so please look there as well.
Simply put, practicum and internship are your first clinical experiences while in a counseling master's degree program. Don't worry - during both your practicum and internship you are supervised by both a University supervisor (here at ECU) and a site supervisor (someone at the site where you are seeing clients).
Practicum is a total of 100 hours, and an internship is 300. You do a total of 2 internship semesters during your program, so in total you will have 700 hours of clinical experience by the time you graduation from our program! For starters, you need to begin by reading the practicum manual to understand what it entails, and then as you prepare to begin internship, read the internship manual.
To apply for a practicum at ECU, first complete the practicum application. This will begin your process of finding the perfect practicum site for you during your time in the counseling program. Also, make sure you have gotten liability insurance. As you think about finding a practicum and internship site, as well as a site supervisor, see if you find my The Art of Seeking a Supervisor blog on the search process helpful.
